Number of passengers at Cape Verde’s airports rises 13 pct in first quarter

The number of passengers using Cape Verde’s airports posted growth of 13 percent in the first quarter of 2011, and Sal airport saw the greatest number of passengers according to Cape Verdean news agency Inforpress.
João Paulo Brito, coordinator of the Communication and Marketing Office of the Air Safety Company, told Inforpress that growth seen in the first quarter was higher than in the same period of 2010, which confirmed the rise in international connections, rising by 17 percent in the period, whilst growth in the domestic sector was 8.2 percent.
Sal airport saw the greatest passenger traffic, with a total of 180,400, Praia airport was ranked second with 121,000 passengers, followed by Boa Vista airport with a total of 67,000 passengers.
Sao Vicente airport posted growth of 8 percent in the first quarter of 2011, and the country’s aerodromes – São Filipe, São Nicolau and Maio – also posted growth in the number of passengers.
According to Brito, charter airlines belonging to the TUI group continued to generate most of the traffic to Sal Island but, in individual terms, TAP Air Portugal leads the international routes to the island, followed by Thompsonfly and TUI Fly Nordic.
At Sao Vicente airport international traffic continued to be led by TACV Cabo Verde Airlines, which links the island to Lisbon, Amsterdam. Boston and Paris/Charles de Gaulle. (macauhub)
