Tourism up 10.3% in first quarter of 2018



Cape Verde’s hotel establishments received 215,000 tourists in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 10.3% compared to the same period of 2017, according to figures released on Thursday by the Cape Verdean National Statistics Institute (INE).

Tourists entering the archipelago in the first quarter, which saw a real increase of 20,186, led to 1.34 million overnight stays, an increase of 10.6%, with an average stay of 5.9 nights.

Hotels continued to be the most sought-after establishments, with 85.2% of the total, followed by bed and breakfasts, with 4.3%, pensions and tourist villages, both with 3.3% each.

The Island of Sal was the one that received the largest number of tourists, with 51.8% of the total entries, followed by the island of Boa Vista, with 23.9% and Santiago with 11.0% of the entries.

The main market for tourists was the United Kingdom with 20.0% of the total entries, followed by Germany, France and the Netherlands, accounting respectively for 12.4%, 12.2% and 11.2% of total entries.

For overnight stays, the United Kingdom remained in first place with 26.9% of the total, followed by the Netherlands, Germany and France, with 12.3%, 11.6% and 9.8%, respectively. (macauhub)
