In 2024, Cape Verde achieved the huge milestone of being declared malaria-free by the World Health Organisation for the first time in 50 years. The disease, which killed over half a million people in Africa in 2022, has not been locally transmitted in Cape Verde for over three years. This success has been achieved by Cape Verde's careful control and monitoring, and the free care and diagnostic services it provides for international travellers.Cape Verde's Health Minister Dr Filomena Gonçalves told the BBC:"This success reflects the hard work and dedication of countless health professionals, collaborators, communities and international partners. It is a testimony to what can be achieved through collective commitment to improving public health." Cape Verde reaches malaria-free milestone - BBC News Photo by Victor Svistunov on Unsplash
